Apples in Winter is a compilation of music from
various times and cultures in a celebration of traditions of Christmas and the
Winter season. From France came the 13th century Marche de Turenne, as well as the 16th
century song, Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella. We drew from Scotland's musical heritage in
selecting a Shetland tune entitled Christmas Day Ida Morning, Robert Burns original version of
Auld Lang Syne, and a beautiful Hebredian melody, The Christ Child's Lullaby.
England offered us wonderful dance tunes such as, Chestnut and
Parson's Farewell from the 17th century
English Dancing
Master, as well as the popular Gloucester Wassail. Turlough O'Carolan
of Ireland composed dozens of memorable melodies and we chose his Carolan's Welcome for our recording. We included the first carol written in the new world,
the Huron Carol, and from the rich musical history of Virginia
came such tunes as Breaking up Christmas and Cold Frosty Morning. For more information on the selections
you can read the liner notes, lyrics and references here.

The Road Out of Town is our second collection. Ranging from
18th into early 19th century music, the album features several examples of tunes and songs
that traveled from old countries to new. We've also included three original (neo-traditional)
tunes written by members of the band (we figured as long as we're portraying 18th century
musicians, we might as well portray 18th century composers). For more information on the
selections you can read the liner notes, lyrics and references
here. To hear sample selections, click on underlined titles.

Jefferson and Liberty is a collection of 18th century tunes and songs that we chose as representative of those played and sung by working class musicians in the North American colonies (of course, we also chose them because we enjoy playing them so much). The album features tunes and songs from the English, Irish, Scottish and French traditions of colonial America. We did a fair amount of research on the selections, and for those that are interested in such things, we have posted a full version of the liner notes here. (complete with references). Tangent is Marsha Wallace, Dreda McCreary and Connie Smith. Why Tangent? Because they are constantly off
on one. They wander from traditional songs of the British Isles to
original material to contempory tunes and songs, then back to traditional Amercan music. But their goal has always been
consistent (to have fun) and their performances reflect this creed. With full time jobs, families (eight kids and a grandson
between them) and other obligations, making music is the carefree, creartive part of their lives. Untaming the Shrew is a perfect
illustration of their variety of styles and freedom of spirit.
